Shopping culture has shifted towards one where old clothes are simply disposed of and replaced with new ones. More impulse purchases are made and then never worn, as you probably know, that's the model promoted by fast fashion brands that aim at selling huge quantities of clothes at very low prices. We buy so many 'trendy' pieces that end up discarding, creating huge amounts of waste.
The average consumer now buys 60% more items of clothing than in 2000, but each garment is kept for half as long. These buying habits contribute to the 39 million tonnes of post-consumer textile waste that is generated (at a minimum) worldwide each year – primarily in the form of garments.
but why are so many clothes thrown away?
