Campaigns and initiatives on sustainable fashion

There are many issues in the fashion industry, and some organisations are trying to tackle them by raising awareness, publishing reports and creating petitions to sign. Here are 12 of the most influential campaigns.


1. Clean clothes campaign


After the disasters that happened due to poor working conditions, this initiative works to structurally improve conditions of workers in the global garment and sportswear industry and empowering them to demand changes, whether it's to have a living wage or shorter work days. They have a pledge you can sign here to demand transparency


2. Transparency pledge


It's a coalition of 9 trade union federations and human rights organisations that urges companies to be more transparent by publishing manufacture sites, the names and addresses of all authorised production units and processing facilities, as well as what products are made and how many people work there.

3. New standard institute


They seek to bring together and accelerate existing sustainability efforts in the industry and ensure that strong science and data drives change in the sector. They are urging brands to meet science based targets, sooner than 2030.

4.The UN alliance for sustainable fashion


It's an initiative of the UN committed to changing the path of fashion, reducing its negative environmental and social impacts; and turning fashion into a driver of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

5. Ethical fashion initiative


Works in developing countries and aims at connecting marginalised artisan communities in challenging and remote locations with global lifestyle brands.

This access to the market creates employment for artisans, and an opportunity to improve their lives and contributing to the development of artisans and their export capacities.

6. Fashion for good


Their aim is to transform from linear ‘take-make-waste’ model of fashion to a circular Good Fashion approach that is restorative and regenerative by design.

Good stands for good materials, good economy, good energy, good water, good lives. They are trying to innovate fashion and also have a museum in Amsterdam.

7.Remake our world


It's a community of people who want to use their voice and purchasing power to buy better, remaking their closets with clothes that respect women and our planet.

They share facts and stories to help you break up with fast fashion, whose bargain prices disempower women, exploit our natural resources and contribute to limitless waste.

8.Fashion revolution


a worldwide global movement for a fashion industry that values people, the environment, creativity and profit in equal measure.

Their aim is to unite people and organisations to work together towards radically changing the way clothes are sourced, produced and consumed, so that clothing is made in a safe, clean and fair way. They scrutinise industry practices and raise awareness on the issues of the fashion industry. Fashion Revolution strives to be action-oriented and solution focused, and teaches people that they have power to make a positive changes.



9.Good on you


They are a group of campaigners, fashion professionals, scientists, writers and developers who have come together to drive the fashion industry towards a positive change, they rate brands on their environmental impacts, on the fairness of their labour practices and on their use of animal products, so to make better choices when buying new clothes, supporting responsible fashion brands. They have an app for that.


10.Fair wear foundation


They're all about supporting garment workers, specifically sewing, cutting and trimming processes–the most labour intensive parts of the supply chain. They work with 130 member brands, who are committed to finding a fairer way to make clothes, and they engage directly with factories, trade unions, NGOs and governments to work towards a fairer industry. 11.Global fashion agenda


This non-profit organisation is on a mission to mobilise and guide the fashion industry to take bold and urgent action on sustainability, which should become fashion's priority. They highlight fashion's priorities in their latest publication


12.Labour behind the label


A campaign that works to improve conditions and empower workers in the global garment industry. Find out more about what they do here
